Two Dangers We Take for Granted But Which Can 
Potentially Harm Us and Our Family

It's crazy. As I was waiting for my wife in front of Walter Mart in Munoz, I noted my surroundings--especially the people around me. Nine out of ten were either busily texting or playing a game on their smartphones while big amounts of cash were being loaded in a bank armored vehicle in plain sight nearby. Not many people see how dangerous this is.

And then nine out of ten people were smoking around folks who were not, including toddlers, kids, teenagers and old people. The adults with their tots just let them hang around with smokers. Then on EDSA (main highway), I saw adults walking with their kids while keeping themselves on the safe side and exposing their kids to the dangerous side of the road, right next to where vehicles drove past.

These are two dangers we take for granted but which can potentially harm us and our family--(1) mobile phone engrossment and (2) insouciance in the streets. If we change our carefree mindset and become aware of what's going on around us (without being paranoid), we'd often be in a safer place even if it's a notorious locality. Sometimes, we cannot but find ourselves amid sudden danger.

I make it a point to be extra alert all the time, especially when something potentially dangerous is lurking around--like the above example, a bank armored vehicle loading bulks of cash in public. If a holdup or robbery suddenly ensues, that will be a surefire thing that can prove quite dangerous--take your choice, a stray bullet hits you, be mistaken as a robber or be taken hostage. Worse, your loved one is taken hostage. It's going to be a nightmare, unless you're Casey Ryback in Undersiege, Robert McCall in The Equalizer or Bryan Mills in Taken (Liam Neeson movie). It's not farfetched, I mean a violent crime suddenly erupting right in front of you. Some years ago, a bloody bank assault happened inside Walter Mart. 



Most people just take these things for granted. While potential danger is there, they pay no attention and think that being overly concerned about it is silly. So they keep busy with their smartphones instead--texting, playing games or listening to music with their headphones on. Once danger strikes, they don't know whats happening and get caught unaware, often figuring among the fatalities.

Smart Phone Engrossment

Smart phones are a big help. You easily contact people anywhere you are and update yourself on your family and friends far and near via social media, even those overseas. That's definitely needful. But cellphone misuse and abuse can put your life and those you love on the line. Death squads riding in tendem can hit anywhere and you may be wrongly targted (or your loved ones) or accidentally hit if you're not alert because you're too busy with your phone. 

You're also an easy target to snatchers and holduppers if you habitually use or expose your phone in any place. It's happened several times and shown on social media but people never learn from that. They watch the videos but remain mindless about their phone use. We should easily learn from the mistakes or bad experiences of others. Some people won't get the idea until it happens to them. It's not a smart way to learn.


Insouciance

Alertness in the streets, especially busy streets, is very important. Everyday I see adults with kids walking in the streets, with the kids kept on the side where traffic is, while the adults stay safe shielded by their children. Daily we see erring drivers unmindful of traffic rules and ignorant about the street rights of pedestrians. They're prone to hitting or side-swiping people walking in the streets. This is why we should automatically put our kids, wives, older people or the weak on the safe side of the road, away from the traffic, with us shielding them, walking along the side nearer passing vehicles. 

Another example is not knowing street conditions where we are. If we see danger ahead, we should take another route or double back to get away as far as possible. But insouciance will never allow us to see ahead. We'll just walk right through danger and realize it too late. Snatchers often attack from behind, like those riding in tandem on motor bikes or those walking and sneaking behind. A little awareness of your surroundings can help prevent these things by taking safety measures preemptively, while danger is far away. If I see suspicious looking people ahead, I'd quickly look for an establishment with an armed security guard and stay there for a while. 

Get Out of Danger NOW

I tell people I love and who face the world out there daily to keep out of danger always and keep out NOW. And always pray, whether in safety or in danger. Where there is potential danger, get out pronto. Each time you see a bank armored vehicle for instance, get away or don't lurk near it. Where there's a crime in progress, disappear from that. Once when I and my nephew were walking along Congressional Avenue near EDSA, I heard gunshots. My instinct was to immediately seek cover behind a concrete post and listen to where the shots were coming from (don't just run anywhere). 

Then we saw people runnng to where the shooting was to watch it. I told my nephew this was exactly why people become easy casualties in crime scenes. They want to satisfy their curiosity and end up hurt or dead. When I was sure where the shots were coming, we run in the opposite direction, carefully seeking cover in anything that afforded protection. I wanted us to disappear from that scene ASAP. So what if we never knew what it was all about? Our safety was the priority. And yes, stupidity is the third thing we tolerate right under our noses and exposes us to danger.

How Many Eggs a Day Can Result to a Heart Problem?

We've often been told--eating too many eggs is bad for our health. But I love eggs! In fact, I so LOVE eggs that I sometimes eat 3 a day--almost everyday! Almost. My late dad ate some 6 to 8 eggs almost everyday. Well, he had perfectly normal blood cholesterol till the day he died. I do, too. My BP is always normal, by God's grace.

On the contrary, my mom was too careful about her egg intake--and she sometimes had her blood cholesterol levels too high! Then she wondered how dad did it.

"Anything overdone can sometimes result to something bad," is what they say. And I agree. I scold myself when I eat too many eggs and discipline myself to put a limit.

But, are several eggs a day really bad?

I stumbled on a health article one day that was good news to my ears. It said eating more than one egg a day is actually good for you.

Wrong information gave us the idea that cholesterol is evil. So we try to avoid any sign of it, even worried at the mere sight of its shadow. Anything with cholesterol, we scratch from our list.

But, cholesterol--according to the article I read--actually helps our body fight ailments--like heart ailments. Weird, isn't it? There was a time when I read authoritative health articles that said eggs were bad. Then, another time, I read another authoritative health article that declared eating more than one egg a day was good.

They often do that, leaving us readers more confused than ever.

Another thing the article said was how the body automatically regulated cholesterol in our blood. If we had too much cholesterol, the liver produces less of it. If we limit our cholesterol intake, the liver produces more of it--because fact is, our bodies need cholesterol to maintain good health.

Strokes and heart ailments are not really the results of high cholesterol, say some medical health experts. But when stress creates free radicals, our blood vessels are damaged and produce clogs where fats, cholesterol, calcium and toxins collect and cause atherosclerosis, experts add.

But without the clogs, high cholesterol is harmless, one medical doctor who was also an alternative medicine expert told me.

Sometimes, you'd be shocked how some people with high cholesterol levels never have high blood pressure.

For years, "authoritative" health info sources couldn't put their acts together. They tell us different things according to the business interests they serve. So, who do we believe?

As a rule, we always believe our God-given common sense. And what's common sense? A balanced diet. In the end, only God is always correct. He never changes.

5 Cheap Ways to Keep Yourself Safe from Prostate Cancer

When you're past 40 or 50, have your prostate checked regularly. It's at this age bracket when the ailment starts to develop for some men. But there are ways to prevent it from happening as you have your prostate gland checked.

Mind you, these are cheap ways to keep yourself safe from prostate cancer--cheap health and fitness with middle income budget.

1. First is pray for good health. I'm always serious about putting God on top of my health and fitness program. I pray for good health everyday--for me and my family. I think of God as both my Doctor and Medicine--in fact, my health Supplement, body, soul and spirit. Without God, there is no health of any kind. So, get close with God.

2. Avoid alcoholic drinks. Beverages like liquor and beer can help trigger prostate inflammation that can lead to prostate cancer. My dad's doctors always limited his daily beer intake because they stressed how alcohol can badly affect the prostate.

3. Avoid too much meat. Meat is often costly anyway, and contributes to your susceptibility to prostate cancer. So avoid having it regularly. The less, the better. Well, it's difficult to get rid of meat altogether because it's sometimes more costly to eat vegetables on a regular basis. Few carinderias offer vegan menus. What I do is eat lots and lots more vegetables and fruits whenever I can (and that's often) so that when I eat some meat it's somewhat neutralized. And I prefer tofu and fish to beef and pork meat.

4. Avoid any inflammatory food. Food that causes inflammation is a definite no-no, like meat, processed meat, fatty food, junk food, canned food, and alcoholic drinks, to name a few. Inflammatory food and drinks are among the top causes of prostate cancer. If sometimes you don't have any choice but to eat these foods, try your best to counter them with organic fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants like guyavano, guavas, carrots, broccoli, celery, cilantro, kinchay, onion springs, bananas, purple corn, and natural food rich in Vitamin C.

I often take fresh carrot juice and sugarcane juice. A glass (about 350 ml) only costs P60 at the grocery area of SM North.

I'm usually allergic to a lot of synthetic medicines and sometimes I doubt the effect of some herbal supplements--not because medicinal herbs are ineffective but because lots of supplements are. So I always look for genuinely effective natural health supplements.

How Muscle-Man Conrad Almost Died of Hypertension

I had a friend once named Conrad. His body was nothing but well-defined and bulky muscles he often bragged by taking off his shirt when he did heavy construction jobs. He was every inch a he-man.

In fact, every movement he did while mixing huge amounts of concrete manually made him look like the Greek mythology hero, Atlas, who carried the world on his shoulders, displaying awesome muscles in the process.

My friends admired him.

But he had one problem--he made it a habit to beat stress by drinking--doing it each night with his co-workers and sleeping so late.

One day, he began complaining about dizziness, headaches, pain on the nape, and weakness. After several days, he decided to see a doctor. The diagnosis shocked him--he had serious hypertension and if he had missed consulting a doctor even just one day, he would have died if he spent another day drinking till the wee hours of the night.

Slow metabolism is one reason why your body probably refuses to lose weight. No matter what your diet or workout is, you may have to know how to beat slow metabolism to produce substantial results.

But wait!

Did you know there's something more powerful than metabolism?

It's called the will--intellectual will to be precise. A lot of things in life really depends on what the mind wills. I'm not saying weight loss is just a matter of thinking minus all physical efforts. You have to come up with a healthy balance of healthy diet, workout, rest, fun, supplements, and a conducive intellectual will. Be a well rounded individual. On top of everything, stay happy.

There will always be negative thoughts roaming around in your mind. An unconscious will to fail. It's normal, we all have that. But the thing is to brush it aside and fill your thoughts with the correct mental will.

I'm telling you, there is nothing impossible in life--if you just believe it--especially if you do things with God. I love the ad phrase--Impossible is Nothing.

Whether trying to lose weight or getting rid of an ailment--try positive thinking or better yet, a positive mental will. Fill in the blank: "I will _______ with God's grace!"

I'm not saying it will always work. I'm saying, it's always worth doing. So what if it doesn't work? At least, it will make things easier. But I'm telling you, it can work! You can make it happen--with God!

Why Too Much Sleep is Unhealthy

Don't oversleep. Limit sleep from 6 to 8 hours. Moreover, don't over nap in the afternoon. Both oversleeping and over napping can upset your body clock and ruin health.

First, the site WebMD says oversleeping may increase the chances of diabetes and heart diseases and hinted on these being the result of depression and being broke.

If you're broke and have no access to health care, you'd feel bad (depressed). That can lead to insomnia. With bad health like that, you're apt to sleep more. Or, feeling depressed and unable to remedy the situation, you' just sleep it off.

I'm reminded of a passage in Proverbs:
Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare. [20.13]
Second, oversleeping can upset your body clock. Instead of having an early breakfast, eating lunch at noon time, and having an early dinner, too much sleep may make you skip meals or eat them too late. I've seen folks eat breakfast at 10 or 11 am, eat lunch at 2 pm, and have dinner at 10 pm. The result is a confused body system that starves during meal time and is forced to work on food during its rest time.

Eating at 10 or 11 pm forces your body to digest food when it's supposed to be resting while you're sleeping. Then, early in the morning when the body is more ready to absorb nutrients, you starve it. An early healthy breakfast does so much wonder to health.

Look at what happens when you eat lunch at 2 pm. After eating, you take a nap at 3 pm. And then probably you'd take a snack at 5? The nap and sleep right after lunch and dinner respectively make you store more body fat than you should.

And third, too much sleep gives you no time for workouts or to move around more.

To remedy sleeping time, gradually bring back everything to normal. Sleep at 9 pm and wake up the following day at 5 am. Eat breakfast at 6 am and lunch at 12 noon. Then move around a lot in between. Take walks and climb up stairs. Keep moving. Have minimal snacks as needed. This alone could make you get back to normal weight and shape! Cheap health and fitness with middle income budget!

When the weather changes, viruses are on the go. They're active in the air. And once you "catch" them accidentally, you start feeling sick. I don't know how one "catches" them exactly, but that's how they put it. You catch flu.

Well, then just play a game of football. If you happen to catch the virus, kick it away as far as possible, even beyond the home goal. No, even beyond the stadium. Kick it out of your life! How do you do this? I found a way of doing so without having to take antibiotics.

But before you try this at home, consult your doctor first. Okay?

In my case, I've grown tired of taking antibiotics when I have flu and severe colds and cough. Taking antibiotics kills both good and bad bacteria in your stomach. Some doctors make you take it to get rid of the bacteria in your lungs or throat that trigger the severe cold and cough.

The flu virus simply takes care of itself. Viral diseases are self-limiting. They stay active in your body only for a limited time and then disappear--or transfer--after your immune system has finally managed to combat it. Antibiotics don;t kill viruses. They kill bacteria.

So, to get rid of cold and cough especially during a flu, what I do are the following:
  • Take sodium ascorbate regularly. I take it 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Take lots of water. A tall glass of it per hour.
  • Take fresh fruit juice like kalamansi.
  • Take ginger and/or turmeric ale now and then.
  • Gargle with warm water and vinegar (better if organic vinegar).
  • Take natural health supplements. I take mangosteen supplements.
  • Eat fresh fruits. 
The cold and cough last only about 2 or 3 days and then you start breathing normally again. The runny nose stops. The cough minimizes. The fever subsides and then stops--bacteria from thick phlegm can aggravate fever. 

Without taking synthetic antibiotics, you save the good bacteria in your tummy. Remember, good bacteria in your tummy aids healthy digestive system. Your immune system depends on it some 70 percent.
