How to Protect Your Eyes from Digital Screen Light

Spending hours glued to a digital screen can take a toll on your eyes, leading to digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Luckily, Choy's Cut is here to give you practical steps you can take to protect your eyes and keep them in good health while working, studying, or entertaining yourself online..

Eat Eggs

Eating enough eggs will prevent eye problems, especially your inability to read small words, mcular degeneration and eye cataracts. The egg yolk is rich in Vitamin A, lutein and zeaxanthin. This is aside from how eggs are good for heart health. Kaya mag boiled or fried egss ka na lagi.

20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule is a simple yet effective technique to reduce eye strain. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This allows your eye muscles to relax and reduces fatigue. Setting a reminder on your phone or computer can help you remember to take these breaks.

Adjust Your Screen Settings

Optimizing your screen settings can make a significant difference. Start by adjusting the brightness of your screen to match the lighting of your surroundings. A screen that's too bright or too dim can strain your eyes. You can also tweak the text size and contrast to make reading more comfortable. Enabling the night mode or blue light filter can reduce blue light emission, which is known to cause eye strain and disrupt sleep patterns.

Maintain Proper Distance and Posture

The distance between your eyes and the screen is crucial. Position your screen about an arm's length away (around 20-24 inches) and ensure the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level. This setup encourages a natural downward gaze and minimizes strain on your neck and shoulders. Keep your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the ground to maintain good posture.

Reduce Glare and Reflections

Glare and reflections on your screen can contribute to eye strain. To minimize glare, position your screen to avoid direct light from windows or overhead lights. You can also use an anti-glare screen protector or adjust your monitor's angle to reduce reflections. For added protection, consider wearing computer glasses with an anti-reflective coating.

Blink More Often

Staring at a screen can reduce your blink rate, leading to dry and irritated eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink more frequently to keep your eyes moist and comfortable. If needed, use artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to alleviate dryness.

Take Regular Breaks

In addition to following the 20-20-20 rule, take longer breaks every hour to stand up, stretch, and move around. This not only helps your eyes but also prevents physical strain on your body. Each blog article I finish, I go out to my porch and watch life in the street, or cats and dogs or birds or clouds. I also do some shadow boxing and arnis stick shadow.

Get Regular Eye Check-ups

Regular eye check-ups are essential to monitor your eye health and catch any issues early. If you experience persistent eye strain, discomfort, or vision problems, consult an eye care professional for personalized advice and solutions.

By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you can protect your eyes and maintain good vision, even when spending long hours in front of a screen. Your eyes are precious—take care of them!

Increased Blood Sugar Even with Zero Sugar? Here's Why

I see lots of cases where blood sugar levels shoot up even with "zero sugar" intake--or so people think. They have eliminated all sugars from their diet, no sodas or softdrinks, no sugar in coffee, no iced teas, milk teas, shakes, frappes--nothing. In fact, no more rice and meat but only fresh vegetables and fruits.

Photo by Faran Raufi on Unsplash.

Fruits? No wonder. There's your culprit, especially fruits in the morning.

Fruits are good, don't take me wrong. I love them and make sure they're part of my diet. But the thing is, I have normal blood sugar levels. Do you? It's due to God's grace and mercy on my health, first and foremost, and I workout regularly. Besides, I watch what I eat. Even with good blood sugar health, I don't always eat fresh fruits.

Why?

Because most fruits have natural sugars, and natural sugars are still sugar. Specifically, fructose (natural sugar in fruits) is still sugar and in fact sweeter than sucrose or white sugar. If you have elevated sugar levels, minimize or avoid fruits that are sweet, like bananas--more so ripe bananas. Half-ripe bananas have less sugar and carbs, but less sugar is still sugar.

Eat instead fruits that are sour--lemon, kalamansi, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, santol, kamias, etc. Avoid pineapple and mangoes. Avocados are good. But always eat in moderation and consult your doctor first. The good news is, mushrooms are not just delicious vegetables but also have anti-diabetes properties.

Here's what the National Library of Medicine-National Center for Biotechnology Information or NCBI says about mushrooms:
In vivo and in vitro data revealed that treatment with mushroom polysaccharides displayed an anti-hyperglycemic effect by inhibiting glucose absorption efficacy, enhancing pancreatic Ξ²-cell mass, and increasing insulin-signaling pathways. Mushroom terpenoids act as inhibitors of Ξ±-glucosidase and as insulin sensitizers through activation of PPARΞ³ in order to reduce hyperglycemia in animal models of diabetes. In conclusion, mushroom polysaccharides and terpenoids can effectively ameliorate hyperglycemia by various mechanisms and can be used as supportive candidates for prevention and control of diabetes in the future.

Organic coffee with MUSHROOMS! (ganoderma lucidum, shitake, king trumpet, lion's mane, and turkey tail), aside from other organic health ingredients. Click here for more details.

Like mushrooms, nothing beats ginger when it comes to lowering insulin resistance and inflammation. I enjoy freshly brewed ginger with green tea when I happen to eat sweet foods because I had no choice but to eat them. But ginger, green tea and even your maintenance meds are no excuse to indulge in foods that are bad for you.

To have a healthy mindset and discipline to go with it, you have to understand the real power in you which God put in your inner self to overcome all odds.

Most Men Lack These 5 Nutrients

According to Men's Health, most men lack 5 nutrients, at least in the US. Men in other countries have better pay serious attention as well because a lot of us are not that meticulous about food, particularly nutrition in food. We just eat anything delicious and we think all we need is protein. The same goes for a lot of women.

Photo by Malachi Cowie on Unsplash.

Here are the nutrients we lack:
  1. Vitamin D
  2. Magnesium
  3. Vitamin B12
  4. Potassium
  5. Iodine
Why do we lack them? The website doesn't say but common sense will tell us it's because we're not nutrition-conscious until we get seriously sick and medicines start to eat up our budget. Then we become health-conscious.

It's basic how getting enough vitamins and minerals is part of good health and vital for the immune system. We don't need medical and health experts to tell us this. Yet, we often demand "proofs" that we indeed need them in supplements. We'd rather believe that we get everything we need from the food we eat. So we say, "just eat."

But here's the problem with just eating food. Unless fruits and vegetables are freshly picked from trees and plants and eaten immediately, their nutrients are depleted when they're transported, exposed to heat, handled during packing and unpacking and stay long periods in grocery stores. Plus the fact that they're mostly grown with harmful chemicals and fertilizers, not to mention some are GMO treated.

With meats, it's almost the same sad story. Domesticated animals are fed with GMO feeds and injected with antibiotics and artificial growth hormones. Eating raw vegetables is ideal (if you harvest them from your own backyard to make sure they're pesticide-free) but I wish we can do the same with meat, although some folks do eat raw meat.

The safest and most practical thing to do is to supplement. But choose the ones with high and proven quality for good results. Aside from my regular workouts I take supplements to make sure my body gets all it needs. And I eat healthy food that I often cook myself to make sure only healthy stuff go in it. In times I eat out (when I have no choice but to eat out), I take my fresh ginger brew with green tea in the early evening before bed for detox and getting rid of sugars.

When you feel strong mentally and physically, you're ready to discover the power God put within you.

This Can Keep Your Blood Sugar Normal

Almost everyone I know has blood sugar issues and taking medication. Of course, we know why. Everything we eat has sugar. One street eatery (karenderia) I tried puts sugar in their Dinuguan, and I don't know why. Youtube videos on cooking puts sugar in all their recipes. Ridiculous.

Thank GOD my blood sugar levels are constantly normal and people ask me what my secret is. The same with my BP. I tell them about my health regimen---healthy foods, healthy lifestyle, workouts, etc.---but what I count as the real big deal is the right mindset.

Most doctors and experts say diabetes cannot be cured, it can only be managed. That mindset destroys all hope. Doctors and medical experts are good and we need them. The same with maintenance meds if you're taking them. But remember that doctors and "experts" do not know everything. They're not God that we need to take everything they say as bible truth. I'm no expert either, but GOD is.

He always has the last word on everything.

Mindset is Everything

Mindset is everything. The bible calls it faith. There's hope for healing for any illness, and I mean total healing. But first, we need to believe---because God says so. He says, "If you believe, nothing will be impossible for you," [Mark 9.23]. That mindset can keep your blood sugar normal. That's what keeps mine.

I can claim my strict health awareness and discipline are responsible. They're not. They're just an offshoot of the real reason, which is right mindset. To be specific, faith. Faith with works, faith with discipline and lifestyle. More importantly, it's faith that believes what God says alone goes---what God says is final. It's not something we just consider together with what experts say with their tests and analysis.

We listen to medical experts, take their advice and prescriptions, but we don't believe their conclusions that go against what God says. I do regular medical tests and checkups with my medical doctor but what God says and promises determines the prognosis. This mindset keeps you hoping for the best---GOD's best---and does wonders for how your body responds and behaves, especially to treatment.

A positive mind is important for healing, particularly for making our body respond well to medication and other treatments we get. Depression, anxiety, and a mind that expects no cure---any doctor will agree---are serious obstacles to recovery, much less, cure. Medicines may even fail with a negative spirit that limits itself to mere illness management, which is maintaining and petting the illness, not getting rid of it.

If we think otherwise and believe more what doctors say than GOD, the Author of Life and healing, then HE makes sure we get what we prefer to have faith in. He will do to us as our faith or mindset insists.
According to your faith (or mindset) it will be done to you. [Matthew 9.29]

Just Sitting There Can Kill You

We all want a peaceful, simple life because it reduces stress. We believe that's healthy. So instead of going out there to busy ourselves with whatever, we opt to remain home and relax. But wrong relaxation will kill you. It's good to go home and relax, but the question is, what do we mean by that? People have misleading ideas about relaxation which later ends them up in serious trouble.

Photo above by Raj Rana on Unsplash.

And I want to keep stressing this (I mean emphasize, not stress you out 😁) because so many friends and acquaintances are falling seriously ill or relaxing in perpetual peace because they've decided to just sit there. Or stand there. Or not sit at all. Sitting is worse. And yes, just sitting there can kill you, suddenly, without warning. It's not about sitting quietly somewhere and then getting hit fatally by something, though that's a possibility.

I'm talking about just sitting there all day.

Real Relaxation

Correct relaxation is healthy. It doesn't make you sedentary, inactive, desk-bound, or anything like that. In fact, relaxation comes only when you're physically active. The body gets quality rest and relaxation only after being physically challenged, like in a workout. And the body gets really stressed out when it does nothing almost all day. Just sitting there. Or standing. Sedentary living wrecks your ability to sleep.

Don't get me wrong. Neither am I talking about getting busy about things, doing this, doing that. Busy is not the idea of "a healthy, active life" because it also kills if fueled by and/or results to overstress. Particularly, it causes inflammation which may lead to deadly diseases, like autoimmune diseases. Says the NCBI site:
At the intersection of metabolism and immunity, inflammation may be an important link between stress and metabolic disease. Intense stress over-activates the immune system, leading to the imbalance between inflammation and anti-inflammation. Source
Although not all busyness is overstress. It depends on your emotional condition during the overwork. If you love what you're busy with, then it's healthy stress. But if it's about beating deadlines, pleasing superiors, pleasing the ego, proving yourself, showing off, having a competitive spirit, guilt, and the like, it's killing you--physically, emotionally and mentally. Even socially. Stressed out folks are cranky, self-centered, overbearing and fault finders. Here's what WebMD says:
There’s a strong link between workaholics and things like ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, and depression. It’s likely that having these disorders makes you prone to working too much. You may use work to avoid depression, or you may work more because your ADHD, OCD, or anxiety won’t let you stop. Likewise, stress can affect your mental well-being and lead to symptoms of anxiety and depression.
It won't show immediately. You'd even feel elated and accomplished with overstress. But the free radical damage in your body system accumulates overtime and soon it strikes without warning. Kaboom! Yup, just sitting there and not just sitting there can both kill you. A lot of seriously ill folks wonder how they got the ailment.

How Not to Die Just Sitting There

Here are tips I got from my research and my experience how to avoid dying due to just sitting there:
  1. Don't get too absorbed in desk work. Time yourself to get up each hour and stretch, walk briskly or climb up and down stairs if you have one. I do some squats, push ups and weights now and then as break from my blogging and this is aside from my regular workouts.
  2. Get rid of the remote. Do everything manually. Get up and move about. Don't rely too much on automatic operations. Do the laundry manually and lift pails of water to fill up laundry basins. Carry dirty laundry water and use for toilet flushing. Clean the bathroom by scrubbing floors and walls with your hands and squatting to reach far corners.
  3. Hobby. Cook often (and enjoy it) or do some regular gardening. Don't use the water hose. Water plants by carrying a pail of water and use a dipper for distributing.
  4. Walk around the block. I used to stop awhile from blogging, get out and walk around the street or the block. Then come back to my blog. Helps a lot. Now I just do warm-up breaks right in the room. I remember how I used to sneak into the empty conference room of our company to do my pushups and kicking exercises there.
How Not to Die Not Sitting There

For workaholics who feel rest, relaxation and recreation are sins or stupid ideas, simply find ways to get overstress out of whatever you're doing. If you're busy with work, do it without any compelling reason. I know it's hard, especially if your boss is strict or competitive, and this is why doing a job for long is a definite no-no to me. I prefer doing a business or livelihood I really love, like blogging.

In times I work hard or do some overtime, I do it because I love to, not because a boss requires me to (your egoistic desires can be your boss). Like when I get a good idea from my bible quiet time and feel I need to do an article because many can benefit, I work real hard writing, editing, putting graphics, toying with presentation, and doing research (lots of it). I don't feel overstressed.

Besides, I don't get tied up to my chair and desk and I regularly workout.

Why Readers Are Healthier, Say Studies

If it only made me more knowledgeable, reading would be less interesting to me, although they say that knowledge is power. I'm not so keen on power. Who cares? Yeah, lots of people would care and be greedy about it, but not me. I have always been very comfy with being low profile and just quietly lingering in the background.

Photo above by Thought Catalog on Unsplash.

But reading does something else. It improves your physical health and even your chances of preventing illnesses and possibly enjoying longevity, all with regular workouts and healthy eating, of course. I've noted this in my dad. He lived till 85 enjoying good heart health--always getting normal results with his cholesterol and triglyceride counts even if he loved fatty food. I suspected that it was his love for reading.

Read anything you can get your hands on. And I mean anything. Offline or online. Checkout anything that is readable. I remember reading somewhere that one guy read even the labels of all the products he bought (aside from books and magazines) when he started his determined bibliophile journey. Yup, he read even ads.

Anyway, studies have proven that reading makes you healthier. Just watch this (when I say "watch" I mean try to picture this in your mind and make it move like a motion picture):

Less Free Radicals

Reading considerably lessens free radicals in your body. Free radical cells are mostly to blame for a lot of illnesses (about 70 percent due to inflammation), even deadly diseases like cancer, heart failure and diabetes. And stress is the number one cause of free radical cell proliferation. In 2009,  however, health experts at the University of Sussex (UK) found that reading reduced stress. They did this by checking muscle tension and the heart rates of folks while reading. According to the study, merely 6 minutes after reading a book, stressed is reduced by 68 percent.

Obviously, it depends on the type of reading material you have. Don't read anything stressful, like bad news, bashers' comments on your post, depressing emails, violent stories, the like. Although some people may actually be relieved of stress by reading suspense novels on war, crime, violence or zombies. The rule is, read what entertains you. My best suggestion is read the bible.

Longevity

A study done at the Yale University involving 3,600 folks aged over 50 years (the study lasted for 12 years) found that daily reading for 30 minutes made readers live longer for almost 2 years than those that didn't. Those who read more than 3.5 hours a week reportedly increased longevity by 23 percent while those who read less as often only 17 percent. "The benefits of reading books include a longer life in which to read them," the study experts said.

If I were to interpret that, the desire to read more gave readers the will to live longer. I can relate this very easily to love for bible meditation. The more desperate you are, the stronger your will for LIFE, the one that Jesus gives.

Better Sleep

Better sleep means better health. I don't need to explain this. It's common sense. And reading holds the key to better sleep, experts say, if you opt more for printed, hard copy books instead of those saved in devices and read on screen. Light from screened devices can worsen sleeping habits and lead to other serious illnesses. However, this is not to downgrade materials found online. Gadgets are easier to carry around than books, so it's a wise thing to save articles online or e-books in your phone so you can read anywhere conveniently.

And there are a lot more information online than in a book. So I suggest you consider both sources--offline and online. Hardcopy books and reading stuff found online.

Here's a tip: Read printed books or e-books while sitting in bed aided by a reading lamp. Don't lie down reading because eye experts recommend books to be positioned at 60 degrees to your eyes which is difficult to do lying down. Or, you may sit on a comfy chair near your bed. I sit on my comfy stool near enough to my bed so that one fall and roll fits me nicely on my bed when I get sleepy.

No More Depression

Suffering from depression? Try being absorbed in a book you're reading, like the bible. Depression can worsen one's health and lead to serious health complications, but it doesn't need to go that far. Because depression makes you feel so alone, reading good books can help make sufferers feel like they're in company with someone, or a company of characters.

Fiction stories that entertain can provide an escape from a world that depresses you. Identifying with the heroism, victories and adventures of a fictional character can alleviate depression during moments of reading. Nonfiction materials, on the other hand, help you with useful information that elicits hope and a positive mindset.

Better Informed

When you're better informed about health through reading and apply what you learn, you have more chances of getting healthier. That's how it usually works. So keep reading books and other materials about health or about your specific health concerns. The United Kingdom National Health Service, in fact, encourages people to join "Reading Well," a program on "Books on Prescription" where medical experts prescribe reading certain self-help books that address specific health problems.

Healthier Meals

When you get to the habit of reading, you'd find yourself reading even the ingredients of the food you eat and drinks you take. Most readers become conscientious and determine to do what is right. Reading develops the habit of correcting personal mistakes and wrong patterns, practices and routines. It happens all the time with me. So, you naturally do not want toxins and unhealthy stuff in your food and drinks the moment you read medical experts and health buffs on this.

Healthier Relationships

Relationships score big in things that make us either healthy or sickly. Good relationships foster good health and bad relationships, bad health. And here's the thing--reading often equips you with good friendship tools. I mean, your broadmindedness makes it easier for you to make friends than enemies. And even with enemies, you're able to put things under control, especially so when you're an avid reader of the bible and get smart with relationships because of it.
Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. [Psalm 119.98]

With healthier relationships maintained because of the wisdom you get from reading, you become healthier due to lesser relationship stress. Yeah, even with your spouse and kids. Knowledge is definitely power here. Here's what a medical expert has to say about this:

“People involved in loving, philia-based (friendly) relationships have [fewer] doctor visits, shorter hospital visits, have less pain, and have more positive emotions,” according to Dr. Kirtly Parker Jones, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Utah Healthcare.
She further said that good friendships help us become more resilient in hard times. Source.

Self Confidence

Finally, a habit of reading a lot gives you self-confidence that aids in better physical health, not just mental and social health. A study on self-confidence and health has this to say:

Positive self-esteem is not only seen as a basic feature of mental health, but also as a protective factor that contributes to better health...and the ability to cope with diseases like cancer and heart disease.

In particular, a quiet self-confidence (as against a boastful one, or one that is overconfident) gives you peace of mind, especially in seeing that there's no need to prove yourself to anyone just to be recognized or accepted. Love for reading can help achieve this if it makes you see the wisdom in quiet humility.

In quietness and confidence is your strength. [Isaiah 30.15]

Safe and "Immune" During GCQ

Picture from this site.

Now we're under General Community Quarantine or GCQ and some people think it's the end of the world. I'm not for GCQ either but I see how we'd be doomed if we remain locked down in our homes with no means of livelihood. Ayuda and SAP cannot go on forever. The economy has got to start rolling again.

But there are risks, of course. Covid is still out there and it's no respecter of persons. So what we should do is stay "quarantined" while we go out--if we need to go out. We need a mindset and lifestyle that keeps us safe and "immune" during GCQ. I'd say, even "vaccinated."

Immune and Vaccinated

Even I see my need to go outdoors now and then for urgent reasons, like buying food and transacting my business. But I've got to stay immune and even "vaccinated." Is there a vaccine already? Nope. What I mean is supernaturally vaccinated by God. That's the first step to stay safe and immune during GCQ.

Jesus said everything is possible to him who believes [Mark 9.23]. Secondly, he also said that if we believe what we say will happen, it will [Mark 11.23]. I love how he said it. And we know that Jesus never lied. All his words and promises are perfectly reliable.
"...and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them."

So ask God to "vaccinate" you through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. Believe it and it will happen. But this doesn't mean you can go out anytime you want and be careless about it all because anyway God has vaccinated you. Nope, you maintain a mindset and lifestyle that makes you safe and immune during GCQ. Even Jesus avoided danger.

Prayer

This is the time to get doubly serious about prayer. I don't mean praying long, poetic and dramatic prayers. I mean getting serious with prayer--like Jesus did. He looked up to heaven and merely said thanks and bread and fish were multiplied supernaturally. He didn't even pray when he rebuked the wind and waves (and they obeyed him) because prayer to him was how he naturally and casually talked with his Father. Natural and casual but doubly serious.

Immunity

Another thing on being immune. Natural health supplements are more important today than ever. Take them seriously every day. Invest on your health. I take sodium ascorbate Vitamin C, MX3, and now OrganiC which is a delicious but super healthy fruit and herbs drink sweetened with stevia alone and beefs up your immune system. All natural. It's best for digestive health (cleans the colon and gets rid of bloating and constipation) detox, and pumping you up with nutrients. If you're interested, tell me.

A Filipino medical scientist I know always says that strong immunity is really the best protection from Covid 19 while there is no medicine or vaccine for it.

And I workout daily to also boost immune health. I do aerobics and resistance workouts, with minimum use of weights--aside from my regular martial arts training.

Street Protocols

Then I strictly adhere to my street protocols. As though I were paranoid or a spy with an extremely top secret, classified mission or clandestine operation. After much research, study and observation, I have formulated my own protocol when outdoors.

1. Pray before going out. In fact, pray everyday whether outdoors or indoors. God is your best protection and it's through prayer that this becomes possible. I don't mean religious prayer. No drama, please. I mean naturally talking with God with a pure heart.

2. Wear surgical and cloth masks. Take a small, handy spray bottle of 70 % alcohol. If you need a break from your mask and breathe in fresh air, do so in an isolated area. Don't catch someone's sneeze or cough 20 or 30 feet away. Even 50 feet away. Don't give the virus a chance.

3. NEVER touch your face outdoors. Keep your hands off your face at all times. Wearing face shields is best for this. But even with a shield on, never touch your face still. Don't get the bad habit. I practice not touching my face even at home. Be disciplined to tolerate facial or nose itches--it's just so weird that they happen as soon as you're outdoors. Don't be tempted.

3. Social distancing (and extra strictly at that!). Avoid people and crowds. Stay as isolated as possible. If you see someone approaching you or getting too close, get out of their range. Maintain 6 to 10 feet gap as often as possible. Never get 3 feet away from anyone.

4. Don't talk with anyone. Avoid conversations when outdoors as much as possible. You can say "Hello!" or "Thank you!" with hand gestures or your eye movements. It's possible with Filipino culture. Allow yourself conversation when extremely needed. Never stop to chat with a friend or when meeting or trying to be nice to strangers. So what if you're not too nice?

5. As much as possible, don't touch anything. Take along tissue paper to touch or hold things with, like using ATM touch keypads, elevator buttons, or door knobs. Use tissue paper and get rid of it properly.

6. Wear different slippers when outdoors and disinfect them (especially the soles) when you get home. Put it outside in the garage or somewhere else but inside your house. Disinfect you shoes (especially the soles) and never take them inside your house.  Take off your clothes and pants before entering your house and soak them immediately in laundry soap and water along with your cloth mask. Then go straight to the bathroom for a bath.

7. Throw away your surgical mask properly.

8. Always wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds. Always. Be paranoid with this. So what?

9. As much as possible, don't eat out. If you need to, buy safely wrapped food from a convenience store and eat it outside in an isolated place. Enclosed, air-conditioned places are best for viruses. Warm, open and wide areas with air freely flowing is best for you.

10. WALK as much as you can and choose safe paths where people are present but not crowded. Walking alone is very safe, but take an umbrella and small bottled water to prevent heat stroke.

But don't get me wrong. I won't go out unless it's urgent. Even if they lift GCQ and say it's now perfectly safe to go out. No way Jose. I won't go to malls or anywhere else just to window shop or idle or look around. I prefer home anytime.

Make these protocols your lifestyle--daily. Your new normal. It entails strict, military discipline (like a CIA operative) which opens up a lot of good things for you, actually. Discipline is what we badly need in this country. Here's our chance.

Where Good Health Really Starts. You'd Be Surprised to Know

Pexels. Meo.
Where good health really starts. Lots of folks say good health starts with the right diet. Some say exercise. Several others who know about wellness say it's in the gut---the digestive system---which is right. But Choy's Cut says it all begins in the mind. And it's not just about the mind knowing what health is. It's about the mind being a "creator."

In a sense, what you need for good health is already put inside you, something like a built-in system when you were born. It comes with the package. All you need to do is believe and apply. Use it. You need healing? Self-confidence? Good memory? Slimmer body? Natural physical therapy? Eerie, isn't it? But don't be afraid. It's safe to harness the power of the mind.

When you realize how your mind is a "creator," you see the incredible potentials you have in you. I believe it's often all in the mind. God put a different mind in us, different from what he put in animals. Animals have minds so they can analyze things a bit, decide, accept or reject---but only in small degrees. The mind God put in us is creative. And you'd understand this more if you read about the mind of Christ in the bible.

In a sense, we can create. That's why we have the humanities, arts, science and other branches of study possible only with human imagination and creativity. But animals don't. In fact, believers in Jesus have the mind of Christ in their heads. Imagine that creative power. We can start being healthy, strong, get well and "create" all that into reality. We can create our reality and the atmosphere around us. We create our aura. We can create the energy we release around us and to others. Sounds like what cults and weird religious sects also say, but the bible was first to come up with the idea. God is the original. Others merely copied.
(If anyone) does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. [Mark 11]
You see that power?

We don't have to surrender our will to what's happening to us or around us. Peter surrendered himself to the circumstances he saw while walking on water. He was able to walk on water for a while but he let himself be overwhelmed by his surroundings. Jesus was disappointed. Lots of times we do the same. We let viruses, bacteria, our medical conditions, etc. take charge of us and we just surrender without a fight.

Create your reality in your mind. That's where good health really starts. Of course, you support that by making it real biologically as well--eat healthy food, live a healthy lifestyle, think healthy and be happy. They say walk the talk. I say walk the thought. Believe. Jesus says nothing is impossible for him who believes. So start creating your reality with backing from Jesus' words. Choy's Cut has proven this to be true a lot of times.

To create your reality, you should start thinking of what should be and then believe it. Build your life around it.

You should also ADMIT your real condition (don't deny or tell a lie about it). Do not claim anything false. Admit your present condition---whatever it is---but do not surrender to it. Do not allow it to rule. In Christ (if you believe him), you rule and reign! You dictate what happens to you, not medical findings or what people or even experts say. Consult doctors and professionals and listen to them, but the last word belongs to God and what he tells you and puts in your mind. With that, create your reality. That's where good health really starts.

Then the rest follows. Your body will start responding to your mind. That's how God designed it. Jesus released the Word when he healed people. The Word released registered in the minds of the people being healed and created their reality. Their minds and hearts believed it. Then the body started responding. Words create and words condition the mind. So be careful with your words.

You need to lose weight? Workouts and diets are good. You also need discipline. But you should understand that it all starts in the mind. Create your reality. Start thinking and believing that fats are being burned each time you sleep---and declare it.

Release the word God puts in you. God released the Word and things got created in Genesis. He's given us the clue there. We're created in God's image---man has not yet explored this truth fully and most people are afraid to. They're afraid of the unknown.

But you should believe it. Your mind---it's where good health really starts.

Can Tiredness Improve Sleep?

Tiredness improves sleep? Many people experience better sleep after getting too tired. So they think it's exhaustion that improves sleep. Not true. Sleeping after too much exhaustion sometimes leads to heart attacks as some have observed, like nightmares that trigger heart failure--which is really an inflammation of the pancreas, some doctors say. So, can tiredness improve sleep?

Like dogs. Dogs happy with their owners sleep well compared to abandoned dogs, or those caged in shelters, or those that are left in the streets to fend for themselves. The same goes for humans. Feelings of insecurity destroys sleep quality because they tire you. Anything that bothers your subconscious or any guilt feelings wreck your sleep, and you won't even know they're exhausting you emotionally and mentally.

More than exhaustion, it's really your ability to have almost zero-worry or a carefree attitude about negative thoughts when too tired that triggers good sleep. You're just too tired physically to worry about anything. Often, bodily exhaustion brings you to a "surrendered" or passive state when you just let your mind drift along empty thoughts and relax, trashing all negative thoughts or feelings. That "peaceful" state right before falling asleep is what causes good and deep sleep that refreshes you almost miraculously on waking, not pure exhaustion.

Click image above for more details.

I know some folks who are often dead tired at the end of the day and yet finds sleep elusive because the stress they had during the day clings to them even in bed. They cannot surrender their worries and urgent concerns and fill their conscious and subconscious mind with them (what you fill your consciousness automatically fills your subconscious eventually). Not all tiredness improves sleep.

Genuine relaxation leads to good sleep. If you want to quickly fall asleep and have a good one, it's about living a relaxed lifestyle that leads to a "sleep-quick sleepstyle" and good rest during sleep that effectively repairs the body's stress-inflicted wear and tear and refreshes the mind. It's possible after a time of re-programming the brain with relaxing inner thoughts that enhance sleep during sleeping time (doesn't make you sleepy during the day, though).

I'm sharing this type of good sleep from experience. So I'm using a lot of my own terminology. I can talk about this a great deal because I talk from experience. I easily fall asleep and sleep good. And even if I sleep just 5 hours in a day (which very seldom happens. My average is 7) I find myself refreshed and in good spirits the following morning. But this is a topic for another blog article.

It will be paradise if you master getting natural sleep solutions that eliminate the need for sleeping pills or anything like that---even if you're in the midst of stress or if you have little time for sleeping---like what some people I know have discovered. Like my late dad. He never had problems going to sleep even though he had work pressures and stresses as editor-in-chief of a major daily and consultant of the Bureau of National and Foreign Information in Martial Law times.

Ever heard of a "sleep zombie"? A state when you crave for sleeping any time of the day? The bad thing is, it affects your moods. Too much stress can lead to sleep zombification, some experts say, and makes you kind of cranky when awake. Mastering a relaxed sleepstyle is the key to kick off the bad habit.

How? It's simply avoiding too much stress and exhaustion to get into you. Simpler put, don't take things so seriously, as though anything on earth mattered for you to get to heaven. Avoid getting stuck with all non-essentials in life. There are a lot of so-called "priorities" that should get the least of our attention--but for some reason we major on them.

Get rid of anything that stresses you out needlessly. It's mere junk, believe me. You think it's important but it just ruins your sleeping habit. And ruined sleep habit means ruined health and ruined life and character eventually. That's a serious Choy's Cut tip for you. And anyway, you can always tone down stress while at work. You always have the controls. It's all up to you.

Here' another tip: Anything you can do without and not die is a non-priority, a non-essential.

And a word of caution here--don't make it a habit to tire yourself first so you can enjoy a good night sleep later. Some people still attribute good sleep to exhaustion so they make it a point to tire themselves to the max to get this result. Remember, it's not the physical exhaustion but the mental and emotional peace prerequisite which has been laid as a solid foundation for good sleep that does it. If you just relax and be at peace with God and yourself, you'll be at peace with everything, and your sound sleep will be a given. I know this also from experience.

In fact, just a few seconds after sitting in bed to prepare for sleep at night I immediately fall sleep. What more when I lie down? I can even sleep while standing in a crowded bus. No kidding. I've done it. Because it's my lifestyle to relax and be at peace even amid problems and work. That's peace from God that surpasses understanding.

I take things seriously and yet not seriously. You learn this supernatural relaxation principle, which to me is an "art and science," when you're deep in Christ who never stops inviting us to, "Come all of you who are tired---I will give you rest." That includes good sleep. πŸ˜„

The Myth of No Time to Workout: Why You Should Never Say That Lie Again

CrossFit Duo
If you believe in God, he told us in the book of Ecclesiastes that "there is a time for everything." Then he went on giving examples. Thus, you cannot say you have no time to exercise. If Solomon (author of Ecclesiastes) had time for everything---and he was so busy running a country because he was a king---how can you not have the same?

I sincerely believe God is very busy. But he's not that busy as other people claim to be, because in fact, after creating everything for 6 days, he rested on the seventh. And Hebrews says he's been resting ever since, even today. God has time for everything---even working out. Yeah, I believe God works out regularly and you can even find him in gyms---because he's everywhere. And I know it for a fact that he works out because he joins me in my workouts.

Having no time for workouts is just pure myth. Often, it's a lie to cover up for laziness. People can be hardworking with their jobs or businesses, but most of them are just too lazy to workout. They have lots of excuses and reasons not to. But after they suffer an illness (or when they begin to feel the illness) you see them trying to workout. That's the time they start exercising. But often, it's rather too late. They have suffered a stroke or had to start taking maintenance medicine.

The ideal time to start working out is when you're still free from illness. Preventive workouts are the best!

I read an article somewhere saying folks in Singapore go home very late at night from doing overtime and yet they take time to run or jog before going to bed. I don't know if that's healthy or not, but one thing I see here---they still make time to workout. And you never hear any news about any Singaporean dying because he ran late at night after a stressing overtime work.

But you hear everywhere people dying because they neglected their health, saying they had no time to workout. See?

I'm not saying you stay out late at night and then workout when you get home. I'm saying God has given all of us enough time to get healthy and fit. We just have to get serious and find that time and actually use it for the purpose. Just look at me.

I research and try to write good articles out of what I research. That takes me day and night. Add to that the FB pages I have to manage, the messages and inquiries I have to reply to, the birthday celebrants I have to greet (part of business PR), and the meetings I have to schedule.

Then offline, I need to meet with people, with prospects and clients, and sometimes make my presence felt in conferences and group meetings. I have to expose myself. Then I have to talk with people one-on-one for connections or make a sales presentation now and then. That's not to mention some troubled people who set appointments with me because they need my advice.

Then there's my family---my wife I need to have special intimate moments with, talking, laughing, eating and drinking with (we both love fresh fruit juices). Then there are my kids I need to guide and talk with and laugh with. And most importantly, there's God who I have to have quiet moments with and laugh with. And I need to meditate the bible day and night. And oh, before I forget, I enjoy my time with my wife attending to our organic vegetable garden.

And yet I find time to physically workout. I even teach some guys Filipino martial arts in my spare time. So, how do I manage to workout regularly, and enjoy it, too?

Well, that's my secret. And I share my secrets in my e-book, "My Simple Secrets to Fitness." And I decided to give it away FOR FREE! Not always, though. I will sell it again for Php 200 after a while. So go get your FREE copy now while in a good mood!

You want to know what's inside the e-book? Well, get a review by clicking here. What I particularly recommend reading here is how you can workout regularly even if you say you have no time to exercise, no money to maintain good health and no place to do your workouts because you're mostly at the office.

If you want a FREE PDF copy, just use the Contact Form on top of this blog (click the three black stripes) or simply email at choysblog@gmail.com. And just say, "Pls send me the e-book!"

I got rid of all those obstacles when I was a young man in sales and marketing and was able to keep fit and healthy.

So no one is exempt because God has made it possible for all of us to have time for everything---everything necessary in life, that is.

Are You a Health Buff or Just Scared of ABCD?

A lot of people brisk walk or jog to be "in" with the fad, fast becoming "health-conscious." A lot are suddenly consumers of healthy coffee or tea brands. And don't health experts say that wellness will be a trillion-dollar business in the next decades? So, are people in this generation healthier than people from past generations?

Photo above by Jenny Hill on Unsplash.

Indeed, you see more people waking up early in the morning and working out. You also see more people watching what they eat, being conscious of their weight, and eating less rice. Wow. But on second look, you'd see that majority of them are really merely spurred on by the ABCD mindset, and which is actually dangerous. In fact, deadly.

ABCD?

Yup, they only start working out After a Bad Checkup Diagnosis or ABCD. They're not really health buffs. In fact, before getting a bad medical checkup result, they saw working out as a waste of time and even make fun of it. Most of them had no time for exercise because they had "more important things to do." When I was starting my workouts in grade school and high school, there were folks who made fun of me. They shook their heads disapprovingly about why I had to waste 2 to 3 hours each morning exercising.

"You're too young to be worried about your health!" they sneered.

But starting young with fitness is a good way of building up the habit. If you're a genuine health buff, you'd start young and early in the day. This way, you carry on the activity as a daily routine. Something like, teaching a child in the way he should go so that when he's old he'd not depart from it.

But many folks who are "health-conscious" today were once upon a time rabid anti-workouts. Workouts, diets and supplements were never in their vocabulary until they had a casual medical check up and found to be already dangerously ill--high blood pressure, high blood sugar, kidney defect, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, etc.

And then they suddenly "discovered" the value of being health conscious and decided to diet and exercise. Then people called them "health buffs." But it was a bit too late, really. The deadly illness had already lodged in and in danger of exploding anytime like a ticking time bomb. One mistake and they were done. So they started working out, being diet conscious and trying health supplements, earning the title, "health-conscious." And they liked the idea of being called health buffs.

Health buffs? They're more like health repentant.

Why do we have to wait for the worse before we become health conscious?

Real Health Buffs

Real health buffs are those who realize the hassles of diseases way before they get sick. So they start working out, watching their diets and taking the best natural supplements even if they are not sick at all or suffering any disease. These are real smart folks who really understand the value of health and how to have it and keep it. They do not believe in the ABCD mindset.

Don't be reactive. Reactive people react only to how illness has affected them already. If you're smart, you won't wait for illness to come knocking on your door. Even if there is no sign of any illness coming near you, you take positive action. This was why I worked out even as a young teenager. I learned about illnesses and how to avoid them from my readings at a young age. So I started to be a health buff then.

No Time to Exercise

A big bulk of people who have the ABCD mindset are those who insist they have no time to exercise. And yet when deadly diseases start pestering them, you see them making time to exercise. So, they have time after all! Unfortunately, they make time for it only when the illnesses have set in. The best time to start being a health buff is BEFORE illnesses start affecting you. Preventive workouts are the smart way to go.

No Money for Health

Another set of folks who have the ABCD mindset are those who claim they have no money for health concerns. And yet, after contracting the deadly diseases, you see them buying expensive maintenance medicines and spending for costly check ups and tests. So, they have money for health care after all. They can afford to spend that much on meds and treatments, why not for preventive supplements? It is wiser and cheaper to take natural health supplements and spend for health while you have no illness. You need to spend less than if you get seriously sick. If you neglect your health, you will have to take higher dosage of maintenance meds or health supplements. Plus treatments.

They Find Working Out Too Hard to Do

Lastly, there are those who think working out is only for athletes who compete in serious contests. When they hear about working out, two words stand out in their minds---pain and hardship---which, they say, don't make sense to them. That's why lots of people hate working out because of the saying, "No pain, no gain." Well, the good news is, in some cases, you can gain even without too much pain.

Try my e-book!

You need not punish yourself to be healthy and fit, especially if you're not an athlete. The thing is just to be healthy. And there are ways to be healthy and fit without punishing yourself and spending too much money. I discovered several ways how and I share it in my e-book.

Yes, you can workout even if you think you have no time or money for it, and you need not cruelly hurt yourself just to gain results!

I see a lot of people terribly out of shape or those who exercise now because they are ABCD victims. To help people avoid being like this, I decided to offer my e-book for a small sum! It's for a limited time only. Learn what to do and how to start a lifestyle of simple health and fitness.

How Slow Digestion Helps Keep You Healthy

Bluestone Chiropractic
Slow eating enables you to enjoy your food, keeps stress out while eating and helps you chew food well. So health buff experts advice us to eat slowly each meal. Just enjoy your food, they say. And slow digestion is also good for the health of some parts or systems of the body. The problem is, how do you control your digestion?

How do you slow down digestion? Before we tackle that, here's the health benefit of slow digestion---basically it helps the body absorb less sugar. With less sugar, you avoid blood-sugar spikes and that helps keep blood sugar within normal levels especially as you eat meals.

And according to health experts, the best for this purpose is soluble fiber. Soluble fiber slows down the movement of food in the intestines. Thus, it will take the body longer to digest food. That makes sugar less absorbable in the body. But what food should we eat to get soluble fiber?

One of the best sources of soluble fiber is Beta Glucan. It's not only good for normal blood sugar levels, it is also known to normalize cholesterol levels and improve heart health. Beta Glucan is extracted from many plant sources  Yeast-derived beta glucan is noted to have the most effect on the immune system. Other beta glucan sources are oats, mushrooms, and barley, and these are the types that have more effects on our cholesterol levels, though they also have some immune system benefits.

Since beta glucan is not digested in the body, it goes through the digestive tract and takes with it cholesterol deposits as it goes out of the body.

Health Benefits of a Simple Life

Associated Weavers
After researching on it, I was surprised to see that living a simple life has lots of health benefits. Well, not really surprised because I knew all along that a simple life was healthy, but somehow I still was surprised. And I believe it is a must adjunct to regular workouts and healthy eating habits. If you want to be really healthy, you must start living a simple life.

One way of living simply is sleeping better. Trying to beat deadlines and accomplish too many tasks at a time can ruin healthy sleeping habits. All that stress destroys your "appetite" to sleep at night. I'm telling you, if your sleep is ruined, then all hell breaks loose. Your immune system is down and then diseases set in. All abnormalities in your blood chem start convulsing.

Here are simple workouts I did to get fit and healthy. Click here.

I can stop here---better sleeping habits. You get this everyday and you're on your way to tiptop health. And it's all possible only if you simplify your life. Cut out too much exposure to the TV, PC, CP (cellphone) and DVD. Get rid of that gadget addiction. In fact, cut out everything unnecessary. Make a lifestyle inventory and get rid of all the clutter. Examine the things you consider as "important" and be honest. Are they really important? Anything "important" that ruins your health needs a second and third re-examination.

Then there is the ADD problem (Attention Deficit Disorder) that a simple life can remedy. If you're too stimulated during the day (multi-tasking is a fad today, for instance, and people are just too proud when they drown themselves in it), you may become candidate to ADD. That means pressure and stress (which you have become addicted to) can ruin your immune system and make you an easy target for deadly diseases. It can also trigger weight gain easily, too.

If you're too busy your attention span keeps getting shorter or weaker, then simplify your life. Or else, you might suffer ADD, and that's a definite minus to your health. It's a whole lot different when you age and your mind tends to be selective about things it remembers. It's a mental process called decluttering. You're not becoming forgetful; your mind works by itself screening your memories and trashing things not important or significant to your present and your vision of the future.

It's also different if your memory is weakening. It's not necessarily dementia. It means you're becoming too busy with almost nothing. You think your busyness is productive. You think you're achieving a lot of things but you're not.

A simple life is also a must for a healthy spiritual life. You cannot tell people how Jesus invites all who are tired to come to his rest if you yourself look so exhausted and stressed out--and gaining weight. You have to check your own lifestyle if you want genuine spiritual health.

I'd start living simply from now on if I were you.

How the Eyes are Indicators of Health and Proper Personal Care

marieclaire.com
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but how healthy your eyes are tells a lot about you. And don't think that only blue, green or brown eyes are beautiful. Even simple black eyes can be a thing of beauty if you know how to care for them.

I think it's useless to say here that watching TV or gazing at the PC screen a long time can be harmful to your eyes. I mean, most times you can't but watch TV a long time or stare at the PC screen for long periods---unless you leave the city and live in the mountains.

So, given the urban living conditions today, how can you care for your eyes?

One, eat red and yellow fruits and vegetables. The bright red color is actually lycopene and is good for the eyes. The yellow or orange or yellow orange color is a flavonoid which is really an antioxidant that fights free radicals. Free radicals can weaken your eyes.

I love eating yellow bananas (don't laugh because there are red, blue and green bananas) and I heard that the black dots you see on the peel are really an indicator that they have more nutrition.

Anyway, if you lack luster and glow in the eyes, it may mean you have inner health problems, even serious ones, like liver or blood problems. The eyes are windows of the body and its internal systems. Doctors often look at them to see if they're healthy. Healthy eyes often mean good overall health. Christ himself gave a hint on this:

"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light."
Thus, to get rid of sick-looking eyes, stay on tiptop health and shape.

But tired eyes are another story altogether. You may be healthy inside but the body will get tired sooner or later with stress and prolonged physical activity. Tired eyes due to stress is what we don't want. Because stress is not remedied with rest. You have to get rid of the source of stress to get rid of tired eyes due to stress.

Get it?

But there are ways to help minimize tired or stressed eyes aside from getting rid of stress. So, while weeding out stress (example through exercise and mental relaxation), you can apply effective first aid remedies to make your eyes look good and full of life. Often, physical attraction starts from the eyes. So if you want to appear attractive to the opposite gender (or get extra plus points to possibly get hired), start with your eyes.

You wouldn't want to meet someone romantically or meet the big boss of a company when applying for a job with your eyes all puffy, with dark spots or wrinkle lines at the sides. And you've got to have a solution for this instantly, like right on the spot. What would you do?

Well, you have to have a ready and effective eye conditioner that's handy and easily fits your bag or pocket. It's also advisable for men. NLighten Eye Gel works wonders for this purpose. It literally deflates puffy eyes and eye bags within seconds or minutes.

Look at the product description:

"NLIGHTEN EYE GEL naturally helps reduce puffiness and helps brighten dark circles.
