Why Staying There Can be Health-Disastrous

gettyimages.com
Just staying there a long time can wreak havoc on your health. No kidding. God designed our bodies to move around from time to time so all systems can run smoothly all the time. Your body is not designed to just stay there idle in one place.

The same is true spiritually, mentally, emotionally, socially (of course) and financially. The moment you stop and become dormant, a lot of things start to go wrong.

I stand up from my PC desk now and then to exercise, but I realize how that isn't enough. I have to run or brisk walk outdoors as well or just go out to roam leisurely for a change of environment. It's good for your mental, emotional and spiritual health as well.

You keep yourself in your office or house the whole day every day and you might start getting some inner disturbances and personality problems. Or anxiety problems that cause a lot of other health problems eventually.

Go out and see life.

Spiritually, you also cannot remain the same, idle, or just "stay there." You cannot confine yourself in a "safe" box just because you fear going wrong. You have to explore your faith in and with God. I always explore the bible with the Spirit of God and go places in the spirit realms with Him. The safest and most rewarding place is to go places with God (especially in dangerous places like the wilderness where you learn a lot of powerful truths).

I brought you up out of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness to give you the land of the Amorites. [Amos 2.10]
Financially, you also have to take risks and invest your money in various ways.

Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. [Ecclesiastes 11.3]
So, don't just stay "there." There's so much more to life than what you see in front of you.

Why You Shouldn't Dismiss This Leaf If You Fear Deadly Diseases

kalusugan.ph
If death doesn't scare you, hospital bills probably would. Some people fear deadly diseases because of the huge medical expense they entail.

So, if you fear deadly diseases, you shouldn't dismiss this green leafy vegetable---mustard green or mustasa in our vernacular.

No, it's not the mustard sauce you put in your burger or frankfurters. We're talking of the leaf itself. Fresh and green. That's what fights off diseases.

Just look what mustasa leaves are rich in: flavonoids, sulforaphane, indoles, carotenes, zea-xanthin and lutein. And that's not counting their vitamins, especially Vitamin K.

Sulforaphane and indoles---di-indolyl-methane (DIM)---have proven health benefits against prostate, colon, breast, and ovarian cancers due to their cancer-cell growth inhibition---their cytotoxic effects on cancer cells.

Fresh mustasa leaves also have amounts of B-complex group of vitamins like folic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin, and others. Folic acid in mustard green has an important role in DNA synthesis as well as cell division.

Mustard green also gives you lots of vitamin-C. Vitamin-C (ascorbic acid) has powerful natural anti-oxidant action that gives protection against destructive free radical damage and flu-like viral infections.

Mustard leaves are also super rich in Vitamin A. This is an essential nutrient needed for maintaining healthy skin and mucusa. It is also required for good eye-sight.

By the way, eating natural fruits rich in flavonoids helps you protect yourself from lung and oral cavity cancers. You never know.

Finally, mustasa leaves also carry essential minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and manganese.

Oh, before I forget, the Vitamin K in mustasa leaves is good for healthy blood clot, preventing excessive bleeding. So, it may help heal Dengue fever.

And mustasa is so easy to cook. Just mix it in any stewed recipe, meat or fish. You can also ferment it (buro) or just eat it raw.

If You Were to Die Tonight, What Would You Rather Do The Whole Day?

andreasmoser.wordpress.com
ON LIFE. The other day, I read how a number of old, dying people were asked what one thing they regretted about in life now that they were dying.

Accordingly, majority of the answers were about not trying to do a lot of good things while they had the youth and energy.

Then the article encouraged readers to do all the fun they could now while they were strong---like traveling, boating, trekking, scuba diving, bungee jumping, kayaking, and other crazy stuff.

Probably.

But what if you had less than 24 hours left?

I for one would ask my family and close friends to gather by my bed and talk about some of the good old days we had and, most importantly, about Jesus. To me, that beats all the fun and adventure you could think of in this world.

Well, it'd be lots better if you could do the same while in vacation in Palawan, Batanes, Switzerland, New Zealand or the Bahamas if you had that much money. Much better if you could treat them for free as well.

My point is, whatever it is you'd want to do and could do if you had only less than 24 hours left, do it now while you have a full life ahead of you and the energy to do it, too. Don't they say how we ought to live our lives like every day were our last?

Treat them to vacation trips each day? Well, why not, if you're someone like Donald Trump, Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg who earn millions or billions of residual income each day.

And probably, I'd include buying and reading as many books each day as possible, watching good movies in our home family theater, trying out different guns at the shooting range.

In the meantime that I'm not yet rich (and definitely I'm not dying, by God's grace), what I really love doing is spend time with God, my family and some friends, especially casually talking about Jesus with them.

But, how about if you have only 3 minutes? Well, to me, the best way to spend your last 3 minutes on earth is these 3 things:

1. Sincerely repent of your sins.
2. Receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
3. Surrender your life to him 100 percent.

Appreciating NOW

www.pinterest.com
MIND HEALTH. Have you tried standing still for a while, looking out the window and just watching how the rain wets the leaves and plants and the street asphalt, just listening to the peaceful downpour? And then breathing in that fresh, cool air?

I used to watch the rain precariously because I was always hurrying here and there, beating deadlines, aiming to finish some things. And rain just kept in the way of all that. I watched it not because I was appreciating nature but waiting for the rain to stop so I can go ahead with my appointments.

Then one day years ago, after reading about so many deaths in headlines, and watching the images of death, I suddenly realized---you never know when you're going. And once your to time to go comes, you never have enough time to appreciate life and your loved ones.

I think I read somewhere about a couple. The last time they spent with each other was a terrible quarrel and then the guy died suddenly right after. What a way to spend your last moments on earth.

Since then, I decided---I'm going to do a lot of meditation from now on. I'm going spend much time appreciating NOW.

I often stop and stare at how the wind brushes against the leaves and branches of a tree, how ants patiently walk in line and greet and help each other with their task, how spiders patiently weave their webs, how lizards patiently hunt their preys, how birds play and sing gleefully, or how water rushes downhill in the street canal after the rain.

I even watch the lightning and listen to the accompanying thunder.

Then I marvel at God and all his wonders around me. The greatest stress relievers are available around us for FREE! And yet so many people are sick with stress-related ailments. It's because they miss the NOW and puzzle themselves endlessly with their what-ifs.

I realized that the most important time in life is RIGHT NOW. And the greatest achievement is how many of God's free wonders and blessings around you have actually enjoyed watching closely and counted.

So I often listen to my wife and kids telling stories, no matter how trivial or foolish. I so often watch my wife closely as she speaks or laughs or expresses surprise---her eyes, hair, lips, voice, pronunciation, gestures and idiosyncrasies. The same with my two boys and grand kid. I often imagine---this might be my last moment with them.

Then I also realize there is so much to do---so much appreciating and meditating on the goodness of God and his creation and the people around me---to be wasting my time on hurrying up and beating deadlines and worrying and achieving this and that to be admired by people.

Appreciating NOW makes you enjoy a full life few experience and understand.

The One Real Danger of Modern Food

www.unclecheffygroup.com
I once served home-made Sinigang na Bangus sa Bayabas on our dinner table. If you are an organic food dish lover like me you'd understand what kind of food this is---cooked just like how grandmas used to cook them.

All natural and nutritious.

Then my sons said, "What's that smell? Cat pee?"

Cat pee---that's how they found the aroma of sinigang sa bayabas.

The real danger of this present generation's getting so used to modern (synthetic) food is that their taste preference system (or taste bud mechanism) is being mutated into something that veers farther away from God's original design for human food consumption.

Most young people don't know what's real food from fakes (or poison).

They didn't develop a taste for real food like sinigang sa sampalok (using real tamarind fruit, not the powdered chemical in sachets), sinigang sa kamias, or pinangat na isda. What their minds and taste buds identify as food is anything processed or ordered from fast foods.

Burgers, fries, pizzas, pastas and shakes and fancy drinks that are heavy with white sugar and food colors.

Well, pizzas are good especially if they have lots of vegetables like mushrooms and bell pepper. But native Filipino dishes are lots more nutritious than these foods are.

Gradually, I talk to my kids about real organic food dishes and their natural sumptuous taste. Gradually they appreciate sinigang sa miso, ampalaya and inihaw na isda, especially small fresh water fish wrapped in banana leaves and steamed in vinegar, garlic and ginger. (Well, they still find sinigang sa bayabas smelling like cat pee).

These were the foods my grandma, dad and mom cooked us and we were healthy and fit. Very few in those days were "obese." Today, obese seems to be the order of the day, everyday. They have to go to gyms and work out hard there to get in shape. In our days, you simply had to eat 3 meals and play outdoors in order to be fit.

The Super Vitamin in Kamote Tops You Probably Don't Know Of

www.thebridgetoselfhealing.com
The popular sweet potato crop or locally known as kamote in itself is packed with super nutrition. cholesterol and fat free, sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamins B6, D and C. They contain enough iron, potassium and magnesium.

Similar to carrots, they're also rich in beta-carotene (and I'd prefer eating boiled kamote than boiled carrots anytime). Beta-carotene is the precursor your body needs to process Vitamin A.

But then that's not all. Look at kamote leaves.

Louisiana State University Agricultural Center researchers have found that both mature and young kamote leaves are rich in ascorbic acid or Vitamin C, especially the young leaves and buds. Mature leaves are rich in riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and Vitamin B6.

Now, Riboflavin is what really makes kamote tops so special. It helps supply the body with energy from the carbohydrates you eat. In addition, it serves as a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body and protects your DNA from damage. It also slows down aging.

Just imagine Riboflavin plus Vitamin C in combination!

But remember, what vitamins you get from kamote tops are water soluble---meaning, your body cannot store them so you got to eat kamote tops everyday.

I love to eat sweet potato tops almost daily because they help my digestion and bowel movement. Anyway, they're so cheap---even free if you plant them in your backyard.

This Exercise Reduces Nervousness During Emergencies

well.blogs.nytimes.com
Have you ever wondered why your breathing becomes rapid during emergencies? You suddenly find yourself in an emergency and your nervousness and heavy breathing minimizes your courage to face up to it.

Imagine if you can have minimal nervousness and normal breathing during a confrontation. You look cool and unperturbed even if the situation is already intense and everyone involved is ready to explode in anger---and there's danger lurking somewhere.

Don't you like that cool disposition?

Well, it can be possible if you do this exercise---squats.

You may also do other aero exercise to achieve this, but squats are the best. Squats strengthen your leg muscles so that they remain firm even under stress (emergencies tend to weaken our legs) and squats also strengthen your heart and lungs. They also enable you to easily control your breathing.

Do 20 squat repetitions in 4 sets initially, and then gradually increase. But you should consult your doctor first.

Another good exercise to reduce nervousness and difficulty breathing during emergencies is going up and down high stairs. Again, ask your physician about this first.

So, if you want to be in control of your emotions, breathing and look calm and cool even amid tension or extreme emergencies, do your squats regularly.

Your Soul Bridges the Gap Between Spirit and Body for Health

visionariesinstitute.org
"The body without the spirit is dead," says James 2.26.

For good health then, the body needs to be linked to the spirit. And there is no possible way this can be done except through the soul.

Often, spirit and flesh (or body) are in conflict. What the spirit wants the body counters, especially if your spirit harbors the right principles and the body just wants convenience. But if your spirit holds to wrong principles, the body finds an ally in it and together they carry your soul to perdition---especially to bad health.

The soul then is merely tagged along by whichever is stronger---the spirit or the flesh. If the body or flesh is stronger your soul aligns with it and together they easily defeat the spirit. Even if you have the best health intentions, you never achieve them.

To maintain discipline in your health and fitness regimen, you need to have a strong and decisive spirit that subdues your soul---your mind, emotions and will. If this happens, it will be an easy task to make your body submissive to them.

For instance, I have decided long ago not to get drunk with wine, drink sodas and powdered juice beverages, no matter how delicious they are. I just drink sodas and powdered drinks when there's really nothing else to drink and I need one. My spirit had determined to drink healthy liquids alone.

I was able to do so for decades because my soul agreed with my spirit. My mind, emotions and will aligned with my spirit. So my body had no recourse but to obey.

Remember to keep sound and healthy principles in your spirit (thoroughly believe them as your "health faith" or creed) and train your soul to submit to your spirit. I always read health and fitness books and articles and imbibe them in my inner self or consciousness. Later, I find my body obeying.

You have to be careful because the flesh can easily grab power and twist things around so that your soul is easily recruited to its cause. Then your spirit gets defeated.

Punish your flesh to make it submit to your spirit and soul.

No, (like an athlete) I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. [1 Corinthians 9.27]
Here is a summary in video that may help to understand your mind and body. It talks about mind strength to discipline the body, but remember that the mind should agree with the spirit:

The "You" in Three Versions

www.buzzfeed.com
You actually have three awareness in you. Your "you" is in three versions---the spirit you, the soul you and the body you. They're all you.

But sometimes they're all different. So you appear "inconsistent" to people.

They have to be in harmony if you're going to be a healthy and fit person. In fact, the three have to be in unity if you're going to have a sound personality and a good life.

Everything goes wrong the moment the three disagree and act separately. The spirit believes one thing but the soul reinforces another thing. And then the body does something on its own as well.

For instance, your spirit believes the principle that you should avoid softdrinks and sodas because they create belly fat in you. But your soul says something else. Your mind thinks of a tall glass of iced softdrinks, your emotion craves for it and your will is ready to do it.

But then you see a bottle of beer and you change mind and drink it instead (the body triumphs over the mind).

Thus, many times you find yourself raising your hands when someone asks, "Who among you here knows that softdrinks is bad for health?" That's your spirit responding.

But right after, you go to the snack bar and look for soda. That's your soul. And then you order one and actually drink it. That's your body obeying your soul (or your soul succumbing to your body).

Or, your soul tells you it's bad but your body ignores it.

Once this happens daily, it's easy to see why you end up physically unfit and unhealthy. Your "you" is never united. Your "you" is never one.

Spirit, soul and body unity should be a daily thing for life. You should begin to train in this.

Next topic---why this tug of war among the three in you and how to overcome it.

Meanwhile, you may find this video on physical health and your spirit and soul interesting.

Why Your Body, Soul and Spirit Talk to Each Other and How This Affects Your Health

www.gettyimages.com
Very few people know this, but the body, soul and spirit always talk to each other. And overall health depends on how they can talk effectively.

I'll give you an example. Your spirit believes in something, your soul decides on a course of action and the body obeys. That's how healthy communication goes among the three of them.

Soul, by the way, is intellect, emotion and will. Spirit is strength of character within you. And body is, well, your physical body.

The right thing to happen is for your spirit to direct your soul. And then the soul commands the body. The soul should be submissive to the spirit and the body obedient to the soul. So it's quite important what values system you feed your spirit because it provides the impetus for the soul and body.

Thus, if you have a languid spirit that hates physical exertion, your soul would pick that up. Your intellect would always reject anything that requires physical activity, your body will always feel tired or lazy and your will is to remain idle or dormant all day---lie down on the couch or sit at the PC desk.

Here's a sample conversation among the three:

SPIRIT: I hate discipline.
SOUL: I think no one has the right to tell me what to do or what's good for me. I will do what I want. I hate people who think they know more than I do.
BODY: I'll eat anything I want.

But overall health needs the three to talk somewhat like this:

SPIRIT: I love discipline for health and fitness.
SOUL: I'll do whatever it takes to be fit and healthy. I'm going to listen to health advices and apply what I think fits me. Nothing will stop me from being healthy.
BODY: Come on, let's do it!

However, this is what happens to most people today:

SPIRIT: I like to be fit and healthy.
SOUL: But I don't have the time and money. And anyway, getting healthy means a lot of sacrifices, especially getting rid of what I enjoy so much. I don't know. Should I? Other people don't mind about it and they look okay.
BODY: Yeah, I want to do that. But not now. Maybe tomorrow.

This is what Jesus said about the spirit being willing but the flesh is weak---weakened by a wayward or sometimes even rebellious soul.

The secret to success in any endeavor, specially health, is to have the right spirit and make the soul obedient to it. This is possible with regular training. God designed the spirit, soul and body to be trainable. It's either you train it correctly or erroneously.

The spirit provides direction but it is the soul that determines success. If your soul is weak, it will always succumb to the desires of the body. Or, it will willingly connive with the flesh and defeat the spirit. In this case, the spirit is said to be "dead."

And we know what the body wants---comfort zone.

More on how the spirit, soul and body talk in the coming articles.
